- It’s October and in Zermatt, it’s the month when loads of hotels and restaurants close until November and the trucks roll in for what’s known as ‘construction month’. Usually Zermatt is a car-free town – electro cars only! – but during October, there are trucks on the roads, it’s noisy and the helicopters from Air Zermatt fly overhead all day carrying construction materials to building sites in the town and the mountains. So we were thrilled when we realised the restaurant at Blatten was still open! It’s a really quick hike up the mountain from Zermatt – maybe 20 minutes at most – and it’s a gorgeous family owned restaurant with great food, a nice wine list ?, a chill vibe, a wonderful terrace, a relaxing lounge area and great views of the Matterhorn. I had the Fancy Salad with chanterelles and cranberry dressing and A had a fillet of lamb with bacon in puff pastry with rosemary sauce and rosti (a traditional Swiss potato dish a bit like a hash brown but fancier). It was all delicious and we just whole the day away drinking wine and watching the sun set behind the Matterhorn ?. Bliss.
